Head Like a Hole

I think Nine Inch Nails' debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, is an absolute classic. It is full of ominous, violent music but you can equally dance and sing along to it.

I didn't buy the album until the mid-90s at which point I was mostly listening to post-Cobain grunge and the NIN sound had changed somewhat, so the album was starting to show its age. It is stupid to say it sounded very 1980s because it was released in 1989 so naturally it did, but despite this, Pretty Hate Machine was a rock album with synths and a drum machine which to my naive ears was novel. On top of this every track was a good one and most importantly my best friends older brother said it was cool - so it had to be.

OK everyone sing along:

"Bow down before the one you serve, you're going to get what you deserve..."
